The Empowered Woman: Beverly Copen

Writer: Kasey SalasKasey Salas

At 87 years young, Beverly Copen embodies the belief that “age is not a factor.” She continues to share her insights by publishing articles twice a month in the local newspaper. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Beverly has spent half of her life traveling the world. Her journey of empowerment began at the age of 15 when she realized she had the power to shape her destiny. This was the first time she embraced the mantra “why not,” choosing to graduate high school a year early.

An avid writer, Beverly has authored six books. Her biography, “Why Not? Always Ask for What You Want”, written by Teri Leigh Rouse is out now. With over 45 years of experience in sales, marketing, and communications, she has been recognized as one of Atlanta’s top Self-Made Women and Georgia’s Most Influential Women. As a founding member of The Committee of 200—a prestigious organization of women in high-powered positions—Beverly has been part of a network of the world’s most successful women entrepreneurs and corporate leaders.

In 1960, Beverly founded Atlanta Models and Talent, which she successfully ran for 10 years and owned for a total of 15 years. Remarkably, the business is still thriving today, 65 years later. Beverly’s unwavering determination led her to pave her own path and stay true to her calling.

Beverly’s impact extends beyond her business endeavors. Deeply ingrained in her community, she believes, “We’re all in the same thing, to make it better.” Despite the adversities and disadvantages women faced in the 60s and 70s, Beverly remained undeterred. “I never paid any attention to it at all. I just followed the path I thought was logical and right,” she states. She served as the only female on the board of directors for The National Bank of Georgia, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for future generations.

When asked about her most fulfilling roles, Beverly cites her experiences as an entrepreneur, author, and photographer. Reflecting on her life, she is proud of making a difference, regardless of the scale. Writing has been her outlet for self-expression and maintaining a balance between work and life obligations. She believes in the importance of reinventing oneself when necessary: “When what you want to do no longer seems possible, that’s when it’s time.”

To young women today, Beverly offers invaluable advice: “Always consider helping others. If you reach out to help someone else, it will make you feel better, and you’ll learn how to make a difference.” She encourages young women to learn to write, be visible, and use their voices. “If something scares you, write down the worst thing that could happen if you do it and it doesn’t work. If you can accept the worst, go for it!” When asked about the legacy she hopes to leave behind, Beverly simply states, “If someone wants something, they have to ask for it.” To learn more about Beverly, visit her website: Beverly Kievman Copen.
